ArteFill® is an injectable treatment designed to not only replace collagen that has been lost due to environmental effects and aging, but actually stimulate skin to produce new collagen of its own. Restoring collagen to the skin eliminates wrinkles, restoring a youthful and vibrant appearance to the face. To discover whether ArteFill® is right for you, contact Dr. Pamela Henderson in Scottsdale, Arizona today.
ArteFill® is composed of unique, permanent polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) microspheres distributed in bovine collagen for injection. As the bovine collagen is absorbed, the PMMA microspheres are exposed, stimulating collagen production.
ArteFill® injections are performed as a minor, non-surgical procedure in the office examination room. Depending on the injection site, topical anesthetics, nerve blocks or ice packs can be used to reduce discomfort. The product contains 0.3 percent lidocaine, improving patient comfort while reducing the need for additional measures of pain control. The procedure can take 15 to 30 minutes depending on the areas involved.
ArteFill® is appropriate for soft tissue augmentation of facial wrinkles and folds and in particular the nasolabial folds.
Although results vary by individual, results from ArteFill® injections typically last a year or longer. Currently, a prospective five-year study is being performed to evaluate long-term effectiveness and safety.
Although uncommon, risks associated with the use of ArteFill ®are generally mild and may include bruising, swelling, bumps, redness, pain/tenderness, firmness, itching, discoloration, and infection. To decrease risk of bruising, discontinuing substances that can prolong bleeding such as aspirin products and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (ibuprofen, aspirin, etc.) may be desirable.
Yes, because ArteFill® contains bovine collagen, a skin test is required 30 days before the treatment.
Injections should not be performed in patients with positive skin tests, or in areas of acute infection or inflammation. ArteFill® is not for people with severe allergies, a history of abnormal scarring (keloid or hypertrophic scars) or hypersensitivity to any of the components. The safety of using ArteFill® during pregnancy, or while breast-feeding, has not been established. Additional contraindications may exist and will be discussed with Dr. Henderson during the consultation.
After receiving ArteFill® injections, an ice pack may be used to reduce bruising and swelling. Excessive exposure to sun and heat should be avoided for a minimum of 24 hours. If lumpiness is noted as the swelling resolves, gentle massage may be recommended.
