What Is BOTOX® Cosmetic?

BOTOX

BOTOX® Cosmetic is a natural, purified toxin produced by the bacterium clostridium botulinum that works by blocking nerve impulses to the injected, overactive muscles. Currently FDA-approved for treatment of the muscles between the brows (glabella), it is also available for use off-label in other areas including the forehead, the sides of the nose, and the crows’ feet regions to reduce wrinkles as well as the chin to reduce dimpling. The results are generally confined to the area of injection to create a smoother, more refreshed appearance.

The off-label use of a medically approved product by the FDA is allowed because of the 1997 amendment to the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act 6 which states: “Nothing in (FD&C Act) shall be construed to limit or interfere with the authority of a healthcare practitioner to prescribe or administer any legally marketed device to a patient for any condition or disease within a legitimate health care practitioner-patient relationship.Using BOTOX® Cosmetic outside of the glabella is therefore an off-label but acceptable usage of this product.

How Is the Procedure Performed?

BOTOX® Cosmetic injections are administered in just a few minutes in the office examination room. Depending on the injection site, topical anesthetics or ice packs can be used to reduce discomfort but are generally not required. For additional information about the BOTOX® Cosmetic procedure, contact Dr. Henderson’s practice in Scottsdale, Arizona.

How Long Does It Take to See Results?

Most patients will see results within two to three days of receiving BOTOX® Cosmetic injections, but continued improvement can be seen up to 30 days after the injections.

How Long Does BOTOX® Cosmetic Last?

Although the results vary by individual, longevity is typically between three to four months. With continued regular use, longer lasting results up to six months have been seen in some patients.

What Are the Risks?

Although uncommon, risks associated with the use of BOTOX® Cosmetic may include pain, infection, inflammation, redness, bruising, swelling, and tenderness. To decrease risk of bruising, discontinuing substances that can prolong bleeding such as aspirin products and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (ibuprofen, aspirin, etc.) is advised. More serious side effects are extremely rare and can be discussed during a consultation with Dr. Henderson.

Are There Any Contraindications?

Injections should not be performed in areas of acute infection or inflammation. BOTOX® Cosmetic is not for people with hypersensitivity to any of the components or in patients with any disease that affects the muscles or nerves (such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis [ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease] myasthenia gravis, or Lambert-Eaton syndrome). Safety during pregnancy or while breast-feeding has not been established. Additional contraindications may exist and are discussed with Dr. Henderson during the consultation.

Is There Anything I Should or Shouldn’t Do after Treatment?

It is recommended to avoid massaging the injection sites and to keep the head elevated for the first several hours. Patients are also advised to repeatedly move the injected muscles for the first few hours after injection to help the toxin bind to the muscle receptors.
