Replace Skin’s Hyaluronic Acid
JUVÉDERM® and Restylane® Scottsdale, Arizona

Restylane® is a gel material composed of hyaluronic acid which is a substance naturally found in the skin. Hyaluronic production diminishes with age, resulting in loss of skin suppleness and resiliency, and the deepening of folds and wrinkles. The injectable treatments are a safe and effective way to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, restore facial volume, and enhance lip contours. To learn more about Restylane®, contact Dr. Pamela Henderson in Scottsdale, Arizona, where she proudly serves patients from throughout the greater Phoenix area.

How Is the Procedure Performed?

The injections are minor, non-surgical procedures performed in Dr. Henderson’s office examination room. Depending on the injection site, topical anesthetics, nerve blocks, or ice packs can be used to reduce discomfort. The procedure can take 10 to 30 minutes depending on the areas involved.

Where Can It Be Used?

Restylane® is appropriate for treating moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds. It can also be used for lip enhancement, facial contour deformities, and scars. Dr. Henderson also uses Restylane® for improving hollowing below the eyes. Because of slight differences in formulations and consistencies, there may be advantages in using one product over the other in different situations.

How Long Does It Last?

Although results vary by individual, average longevity is approximately six to 12 months. Recent studies about the use of Restylane® have revealed longer results of up to 18 months if a touch-up treatment is performed in the first nine months – at which time often half of the initial volume is required to achieve full correction.

What Are the Risks?

Although uncommon, risks associated with use of Restylane® are generally mild to moderate and may include bruising, swelling, bumps, redness, pain/tenderness, firmness, itching, discoloration, and infection. Extremely rare cases of skin loss have been reported. To decrease risk of bruising, discontinuing substances that can prolong bleeding such as aspirin products and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (ibuprofen, etc.) is recommended. If you have concerns about the risks associated with Restylane®, please contact Dr. Henderson at her Scottsdale, Arizona practice. Her attentive and knowledgeable staff will be happy to answer any inquiries you may have.

Is a Skin Test Required?

No. Because hyaluronic acid is naturally found in the skin, Restylane® is not recognized as foreign and rejection or allergic reactions do not occur.

Are There Any Contraindications?

Injections should not be performed in areas of acute infection or inflammation. In patients with a history of cold sores, prophylactic use of oral antivirals may be recommended if treatment is being performed in the lips. These products are not for people with severe allergies. Safety during pregnancy or while breast-feeding has not been established. Additional contraindications may exist and are discussed with Dr. Henderson during the consultation.

Is There Anything I Should or Shouldn’t Do after Treatment?

Use of an ice pack may be used to reduce bruising and swelling. Strenuous activities should be avoided for 24 hours. Excessive exposure to sun and heat should also be avoided for a minimum of 24 hours. If lumpiness is noted as the swelling resolves, gentle massage may be recommended.
