Can you do anything about a weak chin?

Scottsdale Mesa Phoenix chin augmentation

An attractive facial appearance depends on balance. If one of the facial structures is out of balance with the others, then this will tend to draw people’s eye, even if other parts of your face are very attractive. This is why a facial plastic surgeon puts a lot of effort into creating balance among a person’s facial features.

If your chin isn’t balanced with the other parts of your face, then this will affect your overall facial appearance. For example, a small chin can sometimes make the nose look too large, because of the proportional size difference. In fact, people sometimes think that they need a rhinoplasty (nose job), when what they really need is to augment the chin. Small chins also tend to have sunken areas on either side, which are known as “prejowl depressions.” This may enhance or even create the appearance of jowls, as any sagging of the cheeks will be more apparent without the balancing effect of the chin below.

If you have a small or weak chin, what can you do about this? Is there a way to enlarge a small chin?

How do you know if your chin is weak?

While you’re looking straight ahead, draw an imaginary vertical line downward from your lower lip towards the ground. Your chin should stick forward far enough to meet this line. If it doesn’t, then your chin is small enough that it may be affecting the overall appearance of your face, meaning that you’d generally be considered to have a weak chin.

Genetics play the largest role in determining the shape and size of your chin, with your habits in childhood also playing a role. Once you’re an adult, the appearance of your chin generally won’t change much. The structure of the chin is primarily determined by bone tissue, and there’s very little overlying muscle in this area. Because of this, facial exercises will not have a noticeable impact on the appearance of your chin. If you’d like to have a larger chin, cosmetic medicine is the only option.

Chin augmentation with injectable fillers

One possibility is to use injectable fillers to augment the appearance of the chin. Fillers can be made of various substances, and are injected into an area in order to add volume. Injecting fillers into specific areas around the chin can create the appearance of a larger and stronger chin.

There are different types of fillers, which have different properties. For augmenting the chin, it’s important to choose fillers that are thick enough to be durable, while also being soft enough not to create obvious lumps beneath the skin. Dr. Henderson will advise you on which filler she recommends for using in this area.

Although some fillers last longer than others, all fillers are temporary, and the results will gradually fade over time. If you enjoy your results, then you’ll need to have touch-up procedures in order to maintain them.

Chin augmentation with facial fat transfer

For some people, facial fat transfer is another option for chin augmentation. This involves taking fat from another area of your body using liposuction. This fat is then carefully processed and injected into the area of your chin. If the procedure is done well, then some of the fat tissue will get established in its new location and will remain there permanently.

Facial fat transfer offers permanent results. Once the new fat tissue has stabilized, it will not change unless you gain or lose a lot of weight. However, the exact amount of fat that remains is impossible to predict ahead of time. This makes it challenging to achieve precise results, because not all of the transferred fat will remain. Although an expert facial plastic surgeon can use their expertise to achieve good results for most people, this technique simply doesn’t allow for precise sculpting of the final result.

Chin augmentation with implants

Another permanent option is to get a chin implant. These implants are made of silicone, and are placed beneath the skin. Once in place, the implant will remain permanently and will not change. Your surgeon can select a specific implant to deliver precise results, and you’ll be able to see your final results as soon as the post-surgical swelling goes down.

The incision for a chin augmentation can sometimes be placed inside the lower lip, to make it more discreet. However, better results are usually achieved when the incision is made in the submental crease, just below the chin. After healing, the scar is usually almost invisible. Still, this is a surgical procedure. All surgical procedures inevitably leave some scars, and they also require an investment of time and energy in order to heal. You will need to plan for some downtime if you’d like to get a chin implant.
