Facial Fat Transfer vs Fillers: Which one is right for you?

Facial fat transfer Scottsdale

As part of the aging process, people tend to lose volume in the face. This particularly affects the mid-face area (around the cheeks), but occurs throughout the face. Along with wrinkled and sagging skin, this makes you look older.

If you’d like to replace this lost volume and rejuvenate the face, then you have a couple of different options. One is a facial Fat Transfer, which uses fat tissue taken from other parts of your body and transplants this into the face to restore the lost volume. Another is Dermal Fillers, which are injected into the face to restore volume. How can you choose which one is right for you?

What are the advantages of fat transfer?

In order to have a fat transfer procedure, you need to have fat taken from another part of the body. Some patients view this as a positive, as you will have fat removed from a place where you don’t want it, in order to have it transferred into your face. However, for very thin patients, they may not have enough fat on other parts of the body to make the fat transfer possible.

The biggest advantage of fat transfer is that it’s a permanent procedure. Although not all of the grafted fat will “take” in its new location, whatever fat does survive the transfer process can be expected to remain permanently. This fat tissue will act like the fat tissue in the rest of your body, meaning that if you gain or lose a lot of weight overall, the fat tissue that has been moved to your face will do so as well. However, as long as your weight is relatively stable, then the results of your fat transfer should remain stable as well.

Some people also prefer fat transfer because it doesn’t involve putting any external substances into the body. While fillers are made of substances that are very similar to those found within your own body, they are still manufactured. For some people, it feels more comfortable to use your own tissue to restore facial volume.

What are the advantages of fillers?

There are a few different types of dermal fillers, and each one behaves a little differently. However, one thing they have in common is that they’re temporary. Certain types of fillers will last up to two years, but they will eventually be reabsorbed by the body. If you want to maintain your results, then you’ll need to have repeat injections every few months to years.

Certain fillers are reversible, meaning that an enzyme can be injected in order to dissolve the filler if you don’t like your results. This can be an advantage for those who would like to try out a filler and ensure that they enjoy the results before they commit to a more permanent solution. This applies only to hyaluronic acid fillers; other types of fillers cannot be dissolved, although they will still wear off over time.

With fillers, the results are seen virtually immediately after the procedure. Fat transfer can take some time for the results to be visible. There is also no downtime required with fillers, while a fat transfer procedure does require a little downtime for recovery (about one to two days).

The final advantage of fillers is that they are less costly than fat transfer. For some people, this may be the deciding factor between the two treatments. However, it’s important to consider that a fat transfer is a one-time expense, while filler injections must be received repeatedly in order to maintain the results. Although a single filler injection does cost less than fat transfer, the cost of repeated injections over time may well add up to more.
