Should you choose a surgical facelift or a liquid facelift?

Many people have heard of the “liquid facelift” as an alternative to a surgical facelift. This is a nonsurgical option, which can provide good results for certain patients. However, there are some tradeoffs to consider.

What is a liquid facelift, and how does it compare with a surgical facelift? How can you decide which option is right for you?

What is a liquid facelift?

The term “liquid facelift” refers to the use of injectable dermal fillers to create a lifted appearance to the face. Most commonly, dermal fillers are made of hyaluronic acid (HA), a natural substance that acts like a molecular sponge to hold water in the tissues. The injections can be performed under specific deep grooves or wrinkles to reduce their appearance, or they can be used to add volume to areas like the cheeks that tend to lose volume as they age.

Sometimes, Botox injections are also used as part of a liquid facelift. Botox acts to relax particular muscles. The action of certain facial muscles causes deep folds to appear in the skin, and over time, this can lead to the formation of deep grooves or wrinkles. Injections of Botox keep these muscles in a relaxed state, which prevents the grooves or wrinkles from getting worse. Over time, they will gradually fade, if the treatment is repeated periodically to keep the muscles relaxed.

How does a liquid facelift compare with a surgical facelift?

Because they’re nonsurgical, liquid facelifts don’t require any downtime for recovery, which is very convenient for those with busy lives. You’ll also see your results right away. With a surgical facelift, you’ll need to plan about two weeks of downtime to recover from the procedure, and your full results may not be apparent until a few months later when your body has had time to heal.

There are also no incisions with a liquid facelift, and so there are no scars afterward. A surgical facelift will leave scars, just as any surgical procedure does. In the hands of an expert, the scars will be very discreet after healing and will be easy to disguise with your hair, even if you prefer having short hair. However, it’s not possible for a surgical facelift to be entirely scar-free.

A liquid facelift also costs less than a surgical facelift. This leads some people to choose a liquid facelift in order to save money. However, it’s important to keep in mind that the results of a liquid facelift are not permanent. If you want to maintain your results, you’ll need periodic touch-up treatments. By contrast, the results of a surgical facelift are permanent. Over time, the costs from repeated liquid facelifts may add up to more than the cost of a surgical facelift.

In addition, a surgical facelift offers the most dramatic results possible. The results of a liquid facelift will be more subtle. For those who have more significant concerns about their facial appearance, a surgical facelift is more likely to offer satisfactory results. For those whose concerns are milder, a liquid facelift may be enough to get the results they’re looking for.
